If you audited my iPod you'd find it is a crappy mix of music. There's some off items like my Frank Sinatra collection or Patsy Cline or Johnny Cash, but not a whole lot of top 40 fare. Well not 21st century top 40. Hell, not even second half of the 20th century top 40. Depending on things a lot of heavy metal but also a lot of "classical music". Lately Shostakovitch, but over the summer a heavy Villa-Lobos rotation. I have a hard time calling 20th century composers "classical". I really hate discussing music with new people because most people don't like heavy metal and assume that if you listen to it you are dumb white trash. I just found out who Lady Gaga was a few months ago because of that funny Andy Rehfeldt video, and I had no idea who Amy Winehouse was when she died. So many awkward conversations there. I thought she was some American Idol contestant or something. I've never actually seen that show, except the funny youtube clips. So when I meet new people conversations usually go like this:
Random stranger: So what do you do?
Me: I drink.
Random stranger: Haha, no what do you do for a living?
Me: I sit in a cubicle and do boring uninteresting stuff all day.
Random stranger: Well what kind of music do you like?
Me: Classical music.
Boom conversation over! So if you ever find yourself talking to some random jerk and want to shut down the conversation in the most painless way possible just tell them you listen to classical music. They will think you are the most boring person alive and practically run away. This works great, I have never had this conversation and said "classical music" and had a further question or comment about music. If you are like me and hate 99% of all humans you should add this to your conversation repertoire.
Also, make sure you have this on your iPod at all times because 1. it is awesome music and 2. if anyone ever asks you can bust this out to make sure no one ever pries into your music world again.
ZOMG so boring amirite!

Land O' Metal
In Sweden they love and respect heavy metal so much that it can become a life altering addiction. So much that a man in Sweden is getting sick benefits for his heavy metal addiction:
But his sessions with the occupational psychologists led to a solution of sorts: Tullgren signed a piece of paper on which his heavy metal lifestyle was classified as a disability, an assessment that entitles him to a wage supplement from the job centre.
Oh really?
Tullgren currently plays bass and guitar in two rock bands and says that he tends to get a lot of positive reactions for daring to be himself.
"Some might say that I should grow up and learn to listen to other types of music but I can't. Heavy metal is my lifestyle," he said.
For serious my friends.

Morbid Angel: What happened?
The other day Sergeant D had an excellent post about Morbid Angel, which got me to wondering just what the hell happened to that band. I mean really. I am not going to argue about the technical skills of Pete Sandoval. Rather, I'll concede that Pete is merely good and not great. I'll also agree that the talent of that band was Trey. But I'll also make the argument that Morbid Angel has been pretty mediocre the last few letters. Let's compare:
This was Morbid Angel arguably at their peak. Yeah, some people only dig the fast stuff. But man, this is a song that sticks with you. And has a pretty unique sound in my opinion. Domination was pretty good too, maybe not quite as good but to me Covenant was the masterpiece so whatever
Not bad at all.
After David Vincent left albums F-H were pretty boring. I mean there wasn't one thing bad with them, like the vocals or the solos. They were just boring. So why did they get worse? Was it Pete's fault because he is mediocre? Was David Vincent so important? I don't think so. I think what happened was Trey became a lazy video game junky.
What did I tell you? Boring.
So why do I think it was the video games? Well certain things jump out. Blessed are the Sick was dedicated to Mozart. By Heretic the thanks list starts "Whiippieee Whaahhoooieee I Want My MOON MEANIE, Girls Can Rail Too, I Melt My Face Off With You". So yeah. Aside from shout out to his video game clan in the liner notes, there is this interview
"That type of stuff, my group - my gamning team "The Sailor Scouts" and "Flamebat(!)" and watching it. A lot of stuff I'd watch just to spectate, just watch the game, watch my player's playing while I'd be playing the guitar and watching the game. Some of the stuff came from that."
And if you are intrepid you can dig up all sorts of interviews were Trey talks about how he plays guitar while playing video games, writes music while playing video games, and even records solos while playing video games. So basically instead of being a hungry musician he is a lazy video gamer that doesn't focus enough attention on the guitar. So we've had a bunch of boring Morbid Angel albums.
Hopefully we can test this theory, because David Vincent is back and they are recording a new album. I hope it is good, but I actually bought F-H hoping they would be good too. I mean look at the cover art to Heretic. How could it be so flat and boring? And also why is there no bass on that album? The last Morbid Angel album came out in 2003 and it is now 2011, so that is plenty of time for mind melting guitars. Does Trey still have it in him? Does David Vincent still have the "it" factor? Will having a different drummer make the band better, as Tim Yeung will be handling the drums on this album? If not I'll always have Covenant.

Booo!

Kinda lame cover art, but one of the best death metal albums of all time.

You may have missed it: Siebenburgen
The weather has been grey and rainy. Too warm for a nice snow, enough precipitation to be miserable. With that you may want to uncork your Eastern European wine/brandy and put in some Siebenburgen. I know, I know this band is from Sweden not Eastern Europe, but whatever. I loved their first album, Loreia.
Maybe not your style. Maybe the violins and the chick were too much? I thought the violins blended with the guitars perfectly. The dude sounds like the guy from the Leprechaun movies. I imagine it actually is the Leprechaun saying "want me gold coins, want me gold coins".
I know what you're going to say. You're going to tell me that this is wimpy gothy bullshit. Well maybe you're right? I guess this will have to be my next coat purchase.

For vampires, before they went soap opera.
Loreia is solid from beginning to end. The next album, Grimjaur, was ok but not as good. Less of the chick singing and no violin. Delictium was better than Grimjaur, and a good swansong for the band. Except they put out another album that I haven't heard.
I thought it was a haunting album with great melodies and solid riffs, but what do I know? I am a grumpy old man.

File photo of Mr. Booze approving of Loreia.
What do you think? Is this a solid winter doldrums album? Wimpy crap? Does Mr. Booze have a mangina?

Memory lane
Recently I moved, and after packing my life into boxes I decided to share a few musical gems from yesteryear with you boozehounds.
First up is a band from Ann Arbor called Youthcorpse. They have a decidedly Heartwork sound, with hints of classic Megadeth and whatnot. The bassist gave me a copy of their disc. I'd upload it for everyone but I don't have one of them upload accounts, and I'm not buying one anytime soon either. My life is a Johnny Cash song.
Busted!
Not sure if they are still active but according to myspace they haven't logged on since 2008 so I doubt it.
They have a youtube video? WTF?
Next up is an East Lansing band called Summer Dying. They formed out of the remains of Somber, which was At the Gates worship before all the gringos knew where Sweden was on a map. I saw Somber open for In Flames back on the Colony tour. You know, before they were terrible. Somber was actually pretty solid ATG worship, and I'm sure the album is impossible to find so if I ever find the pegs to my CD rack I can unpack it and if I ever get some extra cash that I don't spend on weird whiskey I can upload it for you.
Anyways Summer Dying's first album was pretty great, but their second one had really irritating vocals where the bassist would shriek in the background over everything. Oh well. Still pretty solid musically. They broke up a while ago. Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.
Next up is more Heartwork worship from Texas by the band Deep (not even a myspace page). I bought their first album The Reach of Envy from them when they opened up for Arch Enemy and Nevermore way back when Johan was in Arch Enemy and Time Calvert was in Nevermore. Ancient times! They sounded much better live than on the album. Live their singer was an exact double of Jeff Walker. Anyways they put out a major label album that had half the songs from The Reach of Envy called Pieces of Nothing. Not bad stuff, but too bad they never were able to capture their live feeling on record.
Last I heard of them their web page (on hypermart) expired so I can assume that they are quiescent. Yeah, and looking back on that Nevermore show I still owe Big C for the trip (through a blizzard!) since my carless ass had no way of getting there and now that I have a car I hate driving so much that I don't know if I would make that drive for someone else.
Finally there is Sauron. Another East Lansing band, they were classic thrash metal. Not like these new school thrash bands though. These guys played fast and loose like Motorhead. They were filthy dirty just like thrash should be. I hung out with these guys a number of times and they are all class. I have one of their demos on cassette tape, so for you kids out there it looked like this:

This is what a cassette tape looks like. You could record music onto it and play it back in a "tape player".
Weird I know! The only way I can listen to my tape is if I bring it in my car, because my car is now "vintage" from 2002 and has a tape deck. My copy had a cover of The Return of Darkness and Evil. Damn straight. You can actually find their stuff available for purchase online. What? Not cult enough for you? Too mainstream for you?
These guys kill live
I even had an opportunity to play bass in the offshoot band Harbinger, but I could not afford the drive to Lansing. Then I moved a couple states away and lost contact with the fellas. You know how it goes. I never got a chance to see them live so this is actually the first I've heard of Harbinger outside of their demos five years ago, and again you can actually buy their album online. Which you won't because it isn't cult enough for your CD collection down in mom's basement.

Hand numbered demos only! Cvlt!

One more thing on heavy metal
When Black Sabbath started, Tony Iommi had custom equipment to get his distinctive tone. Bands that used the legendary Marshall JCM 800 often had it custom hot rodded to get huge crunch. Metallica did waaay back in the day. The point is that it wasn't easy to get the tone that the heaviest bands had.
Today you can go to any Guitar Center and buy a Mesa Boogie triple rectifier and get as crunchy a tone as you want. It is accessable, and therefore mainstream.
Here is Madonna playing the Pantera classic A New Level. Anyone can buy a Gibson Les Paul and a Mesa Boogie amp and get the classic sound. So in some ways the sonic mystique that hard rock and heavy metal bands used to set themselves apart is done. It's over. Sorry.
If everything is heavy, then nothing is heavy. If everything is brutal then nothing is brutal. And that sound that once had a specific meaning is now used to sell insurance and promote NASCAR. If bands want to set themselves apart, they will have to do it through their composition instead of their tone.

The stars align
As evidence of the Jungian metaconsciousness, professor Shelby Cobras has some thoughts on the sorry state of heavy metal. Long have I ruminated on this subject. Long have I searched for answers. Coincidentally I came upon answers yesterday.
These days I practice detachment. For great bands will lead to great disappointment, and group association will lead to guilt by association. Therefore I try to reject any labels. To call me a metalhead is an insult; for I refuse to join any club that will have me as a member.
Yet as I introduced my young padewan to some musical gems of the past I realized that my heavy metal collection stops with the year 2000. Oh I have 21st century heavy metal albums. But what I don't have is 21st century bands. I think that Mithras and Lamented Souls are the only bands in my collection that were formed in the 21st century.
As we sit a decade into the new millenium, I ask "did I leave metal or did metal leave me?"
You can see what happened for yourself. Metal left me.
For now it seems that metal has left me. And I wait patiently for it to return. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is never full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Heavy metal morphology: a brief digression. Often changes in metal arise from cross pollination with other styles of music. I see a blending with punk elements most frequently. Often which side of the punk/metal aesthetic a band lies is nebulous. Here I will cite Motörhead as one band that has long sat astride the punk line.
R.A.M.O.N.E.S.
To be sure there are many many examples of this cross pollination. But there was always a certain point when the punk side was too strong for my liking, and that's where I draw the line.
This is the line, folks. Any more punk and I think I'll take a nap. Boooring!
The recent hardcore/metal cross pollination seems to have created nothing but boring metalcore, and this has basically taken over all the new heavy metal that I can find. Or look at it this way, the bulk of posts on metal inquisition seem to be about shitty hardcore or bands from 1983.
Oh sorry, I was napping. Were you making music? I'm sorry, it is so boring that I must have dozed off.
I even went so far as to go through the "reviews" section of metal-rules to see if maybe I had missed something. This served to only remind me how much I hate "reviews". They're all the same aren't they? They try to tell you if something is "good" or "bad", which is only useful if you have the exact same tastes as the reviewer. Aren't these sort of reviews totally worthless in the age of youtube? Just tell me what the band sounds like, and if I am interested I will give them a listen on youtube. I mean what can't you find on youtube these days?
Hey lookie its Phil Lynot playing live with Motorhead. Just another day of anything you want at the click of a mouse.
Oh look it is Hellhammer. The album that ten years ago you couldn't even buy, now you can hear it free instantly. Lookie that.
So yeah, cd reviews are stupid. Just tell me what the band is like and embed a youtube video for the lazy people.
While I am an old curmudgeon that is scared by change and owns a jitterbug, I can be patient. I don't want to write something "positive", but I'm sure that there are good new bands making music, it is just that finding them is more time intensive than it was ten years ago. But the new crop is there, for it must be.

One generation passeth away

And another generation cometh, but the earth abideth forever.
I find solace in the fact that I don't like whatever turds the young kids are into. When I was a teenager I was listening to bands that started when I was in diapers, or some before I was born. So when the young kids are into emo bands like Jobs for a Cowboy, I take great comfort in being called a dinosaur for not liking them. I've been called a dinosaur since I was 19. Whatever "new" crap you are into is the new glam. Or the new disco. Or the Milli Vanilli.

No mosh, no core, no trend, no fun. It took me a while to understand this mantra, but doesn't that sum it all up?

one generation passeth away

and another generation cometh, but the Misfits abideth forever
I suspect that, like any other phase of heavy metal, the new good bands are somewhere in Europe. Since I don't speak "European" I can't seem to find them. America has always been the land of shitty heavy metal. Sure, sure Metallica back in the 80s and all that. But it started in England with Black Sabbath, and came back again in England with NWOBHM. Great waves of bands came from Scandanavia. America, by contrast, was the land of Poison and Bullet Boys. Sure, Morbid Angel came from America, but good American bands are the statistical outlier. All the good bands are European. American music has always sucked. European music has always been superior.
Here is a band from Europe that is new and "good". Professor Cobras sums up doom well. Ahab surprised me; for one would assume a doom band about Moby Dick would be more boring than the book Moby Dick. You can eschew my worthless opinions of good and bad and click the embed yourself.
And here allow me to once again plug Lamented Souls.
Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe the ship has sailed to new musical shores, never to return. So we beat on, boats against the current, born back ceaselessly into the past.

First whisky, now Heavy Metal
First they started to make whisky. Now they are perfecting the art of heavy metal to export to the world markets. Yes, it turns out there is heavy metal in India:
Old school, for sure. A bit of old Celtic Frost in this, and some doomy stuff, and maybe a bit of thrash elements. Also, there is this Testament worship:
Though it has Dissection vocals, I reminds me of old Testament a lot. Probably helps with pronunciation, diction, and elocution. Actually, this isn't bad at all. I hope their whisky is this good, it is supposed to hit Stateside before the New Year. Speaking of which, the googles are telling me that the Amrut homepage will give my computer the heebie jeebies. Weird.
Anyways, the band is called Kryptos. I hope it is a Sanskrit word for something cool. Graverobber would be a cool band name. Maybe it is Sanskrit for graverobber? I can only pretend.
