Morbid Angel: Final Verdict

You may recall that Morbid Angel has a new album coming out, and with that the blame game arises.  Who is to blame for it being shitty?  I still blame the guy that writes all the music and is the only constant factor in the band.

Woweee!

Yeah that guy.

I mean every single member of the band is different from the last album except him.  Now you might be thinking that old Mister Booze is changing his tune because he didn't think it was too bad based on the two songs available.  If the whole album sounded like Nevermore wouldn't you think it was Domination part 2?  But thanks to the miracle of the internet you can hear the whole thing before being tricked into buying it and save yourself some cash.  And wowee that is a terrible album.  When Adolph Hitler rips your album you know you're in trouble.

I really wish I could interview Trey to find out what the hell he was thinking.  I mean it isn't like mixing death metal and techno is a new or novel concept.

Yeah.  That.

He seems really unaware of things.  He seems unaware that death metal fans want to go to concerts to hear death metal and not jungle drum and bass.  This is almost shockingly ignorant of his own fans.  I also want to ask why he thought it was a good business decision to alter the Morbid Angel brand after working so hard to establish the current Morbid Angel brand.

Yeah, also that.  It isn't really new (see above), just new for Morbid Angel.  And it isn't really good.  When you are outdone by something Fear Factory released over a decade ago, you know you're in trouble.

Just to reiterate:  Fear Factory > Morbid Angel.  Yeah, I said it.  I mean wouldn't you rather listen to this:

I'm going to guess that the reviews for Mechanized are better than for Illud Divinium Insanus.  Just sayin'.

Sigh...well we will always have Covenant and their apotheosis, God of Emptiness.

Sick, morbid, and original.  There was nothing like it before and even Morbid Angel themselves could never reach those heights again.

Visions for the future

A while back I had some advice for Fear Factory. It was to update the techno parts with trance music. I suggested Buckley. Well, apparently someone else listened to my advice, and now we have this:

If you close your eyes, it is pretty close to what I was suggesting. Chugging riffs, screaming, singing, and trance beats [via Stuff you will hate].

Because I am an old curmudgeon, when I open my eyes I want to bash their brains out with my Louisville Slugger. But that's just me.

What do you think, did they beat Fear Factory to the punch? Is it too late for Dino Machino?

The nostalgia wagon takes off

Remember when I had nostalgia this spring? Remember when I was pining for the dot com boom and listening to Fear Factory? Well, original guitarist Dino is back in the band and the new lineup has a new song for you.

I'll be honest, it isn't what I wanted from them. I wanted more techno. I was hoping that they could revamp their sound with more trance beats and samples. I am listening to trance sometimes these days. If they aren't working with that Rhys fellow anymore, I suggest they hook up with Buckley. He is a trance DJ out of Las Vegas, and has a great podcast. Episode 2 is my favorite. Come on guys, give me a Fear Factory trance album.

Mister Booze has nostalgia

Sadly, this is true. I became nostalgic for the late 90s through 2001. Those were good times. They weren't carefree times but they had fewer worries. They had with them the promise of better times ahead. These days it feels like my best days are behind me, but I wasn't really thinking about it until I went to the bar down the street. I had never been there before but they promised laserbeams.

The Inferno

As you can see, it was all a lie. Those aren't laserbeams! But still, it was very nostalgic. I saw a few girls wearing those goofy shoes you used to see back then with the super thick sole. You know the ones. Like platform shoes but not. And the music was mediocre techno like you used to hear all the time. And as I was walking home I was remembering all the things about the late 90s. Maybe it was because I could feel spring in the air, and I was unemployed and sleeping in every other day? But I felt young again for the first time in a long time. I wanted more.

The Inferno

Click through to embiggen and see that old school shoe on the bottom right.

I'm starting to get over it, but it certainly took its toll for a few weeks. At one point I even bought the Fear Factory album Digimortal. I didn't buy it when it first came out because I thought it was commercial and weak. I was right, of course. And boy Back the Fuck Up is a terrible song. I was hoping for more of a techno-industrial feel than I remembered, which would have been the logical progression for the band. You know, techno metal to listen to while drinking boonsefarm and playing SSX on the PS2. Yes, kill me now. It had some of that, but it had a lot of modern influence too -which is a bad thing.

But for 3 dollars not a bad album, and definitely reminds of the time when people had tribal tattoos (wish I had invested in laser tattoo removal clinics!), blue hair, fishnet shirts, etc. It was good that I bought Digimortal because it reminded me of everything I hated about that time; not banging lots of hot chicks, not partying and drinking enough, and people hating the music I loved. Sure, regular folk are going to hate it, no doubt. But fans of the newer breed of heavy guitar music hated what I loved because they hated guitar solos. Assholes. Now they all play guitar hero and listen to Dragonforce. Trendy losers. I was an outsider even among the outsiders.

So for now hopefully my nostalgia has waned. But you never know what will happen, especially if I get that iphone I've always wanted...
