Latin grammar with Morbid Angel

Morbid Angel's newest album is titled Illud Divinum Insanus.  In English it can means That Divine Insane One.  Let us step a little closer to the original Latin title for a moment, if you will.

Illud is the singular neuter of ille in either the nominative or accusative tense.  In this case it is nominative because, as best as I can tell, the divine insane one is not the direct object of a verb.  It means "that".

Divinum is the singular neuter of divinus, an adjective meaning "divine" or "heavenly".

Insanus is the singular masculine adjective meaning insane.  The neuter is insanum.

Together it is rendered literally as that divine insane, however I would assume that the lack of articles in Classical Latin it is implied that in this context the divine is being used like divinity as the subject, in that case it would be that insane divinity.  Or maybe Morbid Angel looked at this site and decided that was how they would translate it instead of taking the time to study Latin and buy a dictionary and use the substantive divinitas, which is actually a noun and would make That Insane Divinity or That Insane Divine One more grammatically correct.

In Latin grammatical tenses match gender as well as try to agree on inflections in order to create meaning.  So for example if you were to say that crazy divine in Latin and you were referring to a crazy divine man you would inflect as follows:  ille divinus insanus.  Or if it was of no gender or indeterminate you would say:  illud divinum insanum.

Basically if this were grammatically correct it would be Illud Divinum Insanum.  Or Ille Divinus Insanus.  Or even better Ille Divinitas Insanus.

So maybe Morbid Angel incorrectly translated this phrase into Latin because they wanted to illustrate "insanity".  Right?

Also also, All Music gave it 4 out of 5 stars and Metal Hammer gave it 9 out of 10!  So you also know that Phil Freeman and Dom Lawson picked up on the "crazy" theme, right?  I mean what other explanation could there be for giving it an A-, one mark short of perfection?

Morbid Angel: Redemption

The cool kids are into slowing down albums.  I am into slowing down albums.  Aren't you?  Of course you are.  So instead of crying like Hitler about the new Morbid Angel album you can try to find some redemption:  Heretic slowed down to 33 rpm.

That's right, only the slow burn!  All freezing blasts have been surgically removed.

So what do you think?  Is it still boring and repetitive?  Or is it more like the slow, churning, melting Morbid we all knew and loved?

Would you like a copy?  Hit me up in the comments yo, I can hook you up (you probably weren't foolish enough to buy Heretic like I was, right?).

Also, upon further review Gateways to Annihilation wasn't a bad album at all.  Funny how it takes a terrible album to put things into perspective for you.

Morbid Angel: Final Verdict

You may recall that Morbid Angel has a new album coming out, and with that the blame game arises.  Who is to blame for it being shitty?  I still blame the guy that writes all the music and is the only constant factor in the band.

Woweee!

Yeah that guy.

I mean every single member of the band is different from the last album except him.  Now you might be thinking that old Mister Booze is changing his tune because he didn't think it was too bad based on the two songs available.  If the whole album sounded like Nevermore wouldn't you think it was Domination part 2?  But thanks to the miracle of the internet you can hear the whole thing before being tricked into buying it and save yourself some cash.  And wowee that is a terrible album.  When Adolph Hitler rips your album you know you're in trouble.

I really wish I could interview Trey to find out what the hell he was thinking.  I mean it isn't like mixing death metal and techno is a new or novel concept.

Yeah.  That.

He seems really unaware of things.  He seems unaware that death metal fans want to go to concerts to hear death metal and not jungle drum and bass.  This is almost shockingly ignorant of his own fans.  I also want to ask why he thought it was a good business decision to alter the Morbid Angel brand after working so hard to establish the current Morbid Angel brand.

Yeah, also that.  It isn't really new (see above), just new for Morbid Angel.  And it isn't really good.  When you are outdone by something Fear Factory released over a decade ago, you know you're in trouble.

Just to reiterate:  Fear Factory > Morbid Angel.  Yeah, I said it.  I mean wouldn't you rather listen to this:

I'm going to guess that the reviews for Mechanized are better than for Illud Divinium Insanus.  Just sayin'.

Sigh...well we will always have Covenant and their apotheosis, God of Emptiness.

Sick, morbid, and original.  There was nothing like it before and even Morbid Angel themselves could never reach those heights again.

Morbid Angel humor

The other day I posted an album review of Morbid Angel's newest release Illud Divinium Insanus by cutting up reviews of their previous albums and pasting it together to form a new review.  I thought this was fitting because it is reminiscent of how their albums sound lately; a generic pastiche of their former material.  Apparently the post was deleted by the powers that be because they came from AllMusic, the undisputed leaders of shitty, generic album reviews.  Sorry that you did not get to enjoy the joke.  Though the real joke is calling Formulas "their best record to date".  LOLZ.

As you know I don't like reviews that give normative values to music; with the youtubes at your disposal it is possible to just listen to the album before you buy it and decide for yourself.

As for the new album itself, from what I hear on the youtubes it sounds good but not great.  I like it better than Heretic, and about as much as Domination.  I've never heard anyone call Domination their favorite.  Of course I've never heard anyone call Formulas their favorite either.

Morbid Angel: What happened?

The other day Sergeant D had an excellent post about Morbid Angel, which got me to wondering just what the hell happened to that band.  I mean really.  I am not going to argue about the technical skills of Pete Sandoval.  Rather, I'll concede that Pete is merely good and not great.  I'll also agree that the talent of that band was Trey.  But I'll also make the argument that Morbid Angel has been pretty mediocre the last few letters.  Let's compare:

This was Morbid Angel arguably at their peak.  Yeah, some people only dig the fast stuff.  But man, this is a song that sticks with you.  And has a pretty unique sound in my opinion.  Domination was pretty good too, maybe not quite as good but to me Covenant was the masterpiece so whatever

Not bad at all.

After David Vincent left albums F-H were pretty boring.  I mean there wasn't one thing bad with them, like the vocals or the solos.  They were just boring.  So why did they get worse?  Was it Pete's fault because he is mediocre?  Was David Vincent so important?  I don't think so.  I think what happened was Trey became a lazy video game junky.

What did I tell you?  Boring.

So why do I think it was the video games?  Well certain things jump out.  Blessed are the Sick was dedicated to Mozart.  By Heretic the thanks list starts "Whiippieee Whaahhoooieee I Want My MOON MEANIE, Girls Can Rail Too, I Melt My Face Off With You".  So yeah.  Aside from shout out to his video game clan in the liner notes, there is this interview

"That type of stuff, my group - my gamning team "The Sailor Scouts" and "Flamebat(!)" and watching it. A lot of stuff I'd watch just to spectate, just watch the game, watch my player's playing while I'd be playing the guitar and watching the game. Some of the stuff came from that."

And if you are intrepid you can dig up all sorts of interviews were Trey talks about how he plays guitar while playing video games, writes music while playing video games, and even records solos while playing video games.  So basically instead of being a hungry musician he is a lazy video gamer that doesn't focus enough attention on the guitar.  So we've had a bunch of boring Morbid Angel albums.

Hopefully we can test this theory, because David Vincent is back and they are recording a new album.  I hope it is good, but I actually bought F-H hoping they would be good too.  I mean look at the cover art to Heretic.  How could it be so flat and boring?  And also why is there no bass on that album?  The last Morbid Angel album came out in 2003 and it is now 2011, so that is plenty of time for mind melting guitars.  Does Trey still have it in him?  Does David Vincent still have the "it" factor?  Will having a different drummer make the band better, as Tim Yeung will be handling the drums on this album?  If not I'll always have Covenant.

Booo!

Kinda lame cover art, but one of the best death metal albums of all time.
