Newsflash: Lou Reed has always sucked

I don't want to comment on Lou Reed's newest terrible collaboration.  That it sucks is not disputed.  After all, it is Lou Reed.  He is a one hit wonder that people respect but for no reason.

Lou Reed sucks exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

I rest my case, because I can't stand to listen to anymore. That someone can have a 40 year career based on one song is rather amazing. What a country.

  1. Whether you like him or not is a matter of your personal taste. But your reference to him as a "one hit wonder" with a "40 year career based on one song" is so ignorant it's pathetic.

  3. Out of all legendary artists to emerge from the 60's, Lou Reed is THE most overrated, yes even more than Cat Stevens

  4. I'm sensing the need for an auto-tune Lou Reed project.

  5. He does suck. Mediocre. He bent over and grabbed the bottle of Vaseline to get popular.

  6. Classic case of 'the emperor has no clothes'. He cultivated the image of uber cool & then so many bought into the bullshit that they unwittingly worked together to manufacture a legend -- and then it grows b/c if u don't agree, u somehow aren't smart or deep enough to 'get it'./ Put on 'I'm waiting for the man' and if the monotonous 2-chord shit doesn't make u want to wish u were deaf then the lyrics will. And I actually like some of reed's stuff -- rock & roll, sweet jane, & a couple of others. But this legend status is just crap. Plus would it hurt if he had actually tried to improve his guitar playing and singing? No -- he just bought into the myth of himself as a pioneer & embraced his crappy playing & singing as part of the narrative of that pioneer image. In the end it's not that we don't get some esoteric, subtle example of a genius employing minimalism or messing with our preconceived notions of music; it's that we DO get it and realize that it's just a smokescreen & the dude is mediocre at best.

  7. Newsflash: You're an idiot. Without Lou Reed, it is highly likely that punk, gothic, and metal would not have existed. Just the Velvet Underground & Nico should be enough to solidify Reed's spot as one of the best musicians in history. He was classically trained on the piano and I am honestly shocked to see Perfect Day and Satellite of Love as proof of him sucking. They are both awesome songs. Transformer is one of the greatest albums ever produced. AND HOW CAN YOU CALL LOU REED A ONE HIT WONDER? The guy was in THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. They went from one of the best bands in history to producing one of the worst albums ever made under a major title: Squeeze. Oh yeah, and they made Squeeze AFTER REED LEFT. You know, just one of the best artists ever is apparently a one hit wonder. That's like calling the Rolling Stones a one hit wonder for (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. I am assuming you are referring to "Walk On The Wild Side" as his one hit wonder, which, for the record, is one of my least favorite songs on Transformer.

  8. Omg, Perfect Day is so terrible, it's a caricature of lameness. It should be put down. To compare lou Reed to the Rolling Stones is insane. You music historian fetishisists should not comment on music's objective qualities. You have no clue whatsoever.

  9. Lou Reed made one and a half good albums: Metal Machine Music and The Velvet Underground & Nico. And that good half of ...& Nico needed another band to make. Other than that, the only good thing he ever did was provide a subject for three incredible Lester Bangs articles.

    Fuck Lou Reed.
